살면서 생각해야 할 것들을 사진으로 옮기다
내 나이 열다섯에 TV를 통해 아프리카 아이들을 처음 봤을 때 “그 아이와 내가 바뀌어서 태어났을지도 모른다”는 미안한 마음이 들었고 그 생각은 20대부터 아프리카 구호활동에 관심을 갖게 했고 지금까지 기아후원금을 보내는 행동을 이끌어 냈다. 얼마 전까지만 해도 그들은 없고 나는 있으니 나눠 주어야 한다는 생각에서 한 실천이었는데 최근 알게 된 사실은 아프리카의 문제는 빈곤문제에 앞서 기후환경문제가 더 심각하다는 것이다.
2019년, 호주의 대형산불, 아프리카에 폭우, 우리나라를 포함한 동아시아의 대홍수, 미국의 허리케인으로 엄청난 재난이 일어났던 것을 기억할 것이다.
이는 소,양, 염소 등과 같은 되새김질하는 반추동물들의 방귀에서 나오는 이산화탄소로 인해 지구온도가 높아진 온실효과 때문이고 그 온실효과가 지속되면 80년 후에는 북극에 눈 대신 비가 내리고 지구상의 섬나라들은 대부분 물에 잠긴다는 사실에 우리는 경각심을 가져야 한다

<제니성의 여섯 번째 사진이야기>에서는 세계 극빈국인 말라위와 말라위의 사람들을 모티브로 했지만 빈곤포르노가 아닌 그들의 삶도 우리의 삶과 다르지 않은 따뜻한 사랑과 행복이 있음을 공감하고자 회화적 느낌으로 표현하였다. 또한, 빈곤을 상징하는 파리와 희망을 상징하는 나비를 메타포로 전하면서 우리 삶의 진정한 빈곤과 희망이 무엇인지 되새겨 보는 시간이 되길 바란다.
