나(우리)는 슬플 때 한바탕 울고 나면 풀리는 무엇인가가 있다.
하늘에서 내리는 비를 보며 내(우리)가 흘리는 눈물과 같다는 생각을 하기도 했다. 하늘은 비를 내려 햇살과 바람으로 이내 풀들을 피워올렸다. 풀의 탄생은 나와 우리가 눈물에 절망과 슬픔을 흘려보내고 다시 희망과 행복의 불씨를 피워올리는 것과 같다. 실제로 나는 자칭 가드너이다. 작업실 햇살이 잘드는 공간은 풀들에게 양보한지 오래되었다. 풀은 씨앗부터 피워올리기를 좋아한다. 애정을 쏟는 만큼 씩씩하게 자라나는 풀들을 보며 많은 위로와 치유와 나아가 희망을 본다.

넓은 의미에서 작업의 화면은 자연이다. 그것은 외적인 자연의 재현이 아니라 나에게 어떠한 에너지를 준 자연의 반영인 셈이다. 새로운 자연, 새로운 형상과 주관적인 색채이다. 이러한 작업의 과정 자체가 일종의 수련이라고 하지만 고행에 가깝다. 호흡을 조절하고 손끝에 온 신경을 집중하여 작업을 하면 어느새 마음도 숙연해진다.
최근 풀이둥둥 시리즈와 푸른위로, 피어오르다는 좀 더 다양한 도상으로 발전시켜 나아가고자 한다. 무한의 형으로 항시 곁에서 위로를 전하는 풀들의 무한한 푸르름과 끝없는 생명력은 용기와 희망을 주었다. 나는 나고 자란 곳에서 소멸하는 이름모를 풀들에게 무한의 자유를 주고자 하였다. 풀은 나이자 우리이다.
우리의 삶도 정해진 틀에서 벗어나지 못한 채 반복적인 삶을 살아간다. 가끔의 여행이 큰 위로가 되듯 나와 우리의 투영인 풀들도 둥둥 떠올라 여행길에 오른다.
그곳은 내가 바라는 안온한 안식처, 파라다이스다.
