혜화동은 오래 전에는 앵두골이라 불리워지던 동네였답니다. 어머니의 고향이자, 형제들과 나의 고향 혜화동입니다. 혜화동 성당, 동양서림, 떡 방앗간, 혜화동 주유소, 파출소, 동성 중고등학교 그리고 골목 골목길... 눈에 선하기만 합니다...
정겨운 그 곳을 떠난지 반세기를 훌쩍 넘겨 돌아오게 되었네요. 그림 몇 점 팔장에 끼고요...
실로 만감이 교차합니다.
어느 미술 대가께서 하셨다는 말씀이라던데, “사람들이 자꾸 나를 보면 예술가 예술가 하는데, 예술이 뭐지?” 라는 말... 저 같은 이야 오죽하겠습니까. 예술이 뭔지 저는 아직 모릅니다. 슬플 때 그저 그림을 그렸고, 기쁠 때도 뭔가를 그렸고, 아파도 붓을 놓지 않고 그렸습니다. 왜냐고 물으신다면, 안 그러면 죽을 것 같았으니까요 라고 답할 수 있겠습니다. 정말 그랬어요... 그려놓으면 항상, 보기에 어눌한 그림이었지만 저를 미소짓게 해줬습니다. 그래서 또 그리고, 또 그리고 그렇게 여기까지 오게 만들었던 것 들입니다. 죽지않고...
그랭이질로 덤벙주초 놓듯 삐뚤 빼뚤 그린 그림 들입니다.
이런 그림도 있군 하며 보아주시면 고맙겠구요, 미소짓고 조금이라도 마음 편하게 해드릴 수 있다면 행복하겠습니다. 그림은 글쓰 듯, 글은 그림 그리 듯, 그렇게 미술을 한 것 같아요... 지상에서 중력을 가까스로 버티며 영원으로 향하는 마음으로 그렇게요...
