무소의 행성 b
코뿔소 화가 김혜주 작가의 19번째 개인전이 8월 1일부터 6일까지 서울 대학로 혜화아트센터에서 열린다 전시 제목은 ‘무소의 행성b’ 4년 만에 열리는 이번 전시회에 나온 작품들은 세상의 어려움을 견디는 사람들의 내면, 묵묵히 버티면서 좀 더 나은 곳을 향해 나아가는 끈질긴 생명력, 그 힘으로 닿고자하는 파라다이스의 모습을 모두 보여주고 있다.
작품은 크게 세 종류로 구분된다 가장 눈에 띄는 새로운 그림들은 행성 b 시리즈이다. 어딘가 멀리 있는 외계의 행성 위에서 무소들이 저마다 자기만의 어둠과 옅은 빛을 지닌 채 걷고 있거나 바람에 날려 공중을 떠돌고 있다. 멀리에 또 다른 행성이 달처럼 떠 있는 것이 보이는 행성 b의 대기는 어슴푸레하다, 수묵과 여백이 여기에 더해져 특이한 분위기를 만들어 낸다.다른 곳에서는 볼 수 없었던 색상의 조합은 보는 사람들의 마음에 안정감과 외로움, 쓸쓸함과 희망을 동시에 불러일으키는 특이한 화면을 만들어 낸다. 이것은 작가 자신이 이 세상에는 속해 있지 않다는 낯설음과 힘들게 살아가는 다른 사람들 또한 세상에서 멀리 떨어져 있다는 동질감을 함께 나타낸다. 또 다른 그림들은 초창기부터 이어져온 파라다이스 시리즈다. 분홍색과 노란색 기린들이 큰 키와 자유로운 평화로움을 과시하며 어울려 있는 장면이 특히 그렇다 또한 꽃들이 가득한 꽃밭에서 날고 있는 작은 코뿔소들은 작가가 보여 주고 싶은, 혹은 가서 살고 싶은 세상의 또 다른 표현이다 마지막으로는 온몸을 꽃으로 장식하고 걸어가는 거대한 코뿔소들이 있다. 새들이 등에 앉아 있기도 하고 몸 전체에 꽃이 화려하게 피어 있는 거대한 코뿔소는 자신감과 자존감을 지니고 자신의 아름다움을 인정받고 싶은 모든 사람들의 꿈을 형상화한 것이다.
작가는 말한다 . 무소는 초식 동물이지만 강인한 힘을 가졌다. 나는 무소를 주제로 보통 사람들이 내면에 있는 아픔과 기쁨, 서로를 돕고자 하는 선한 의지, 지금은 멀리 있지만 언젠가는 낙원에 닿을 수 있다는 꿈을 그리고 있다. 진심과 선의,함께 손을 잡는 우정과 연대가 필요한 사람들이여. 아마도 우리는 또다른 행성b에 속한 모양이다.
이번 행성 b 전시는 세상에서 소외되어 있다고 느끼는 수많은 사람들에게 보내는 나의 위로이자 동지 의식이다. 작가는 삼천포 출신으로 머니투데이 <김혜주의 그림보따리 풀기>2016-2018년까지 글과 그림 연재를 했으며 , 2018~2020까지 서울신문 <강남순의 낮꿈꾸기> 삽화를 연재했다.
