<김서연 Kelly Kim - 작가노트>
나는 매사에 나 자신과 주변에 집중하고 있다. 살다 보면 재밌고 예상치 못 한 일들이 내 주위로 많이 일어나고 있는데, 바쁘다는 핑계로 그걸 다 지나치는 게 나는 아쉽고 아까웠다. 조금만 더 집중하고 신경 쓰면 다른 사람들은 미처 못 봤던 걸 난 찾아낼 수 있기 때문이다.
그걸 알고 난 뒤, 나는 내가 바라보는 것들, 찾아내는 것들, 알아내는 것들, 그리고 기억하는 것들을 모두 기록하기 시작했다. 방법은 여러 가지다: 녹음, 촬영, 그림, 글, 그리고 사진. 이 모든 게 모여서 나의 작품들이 탄생하게 된다.
내가 찾아낸 것들은 매우 다양하다. 뉴욕 거리에 많은 사람들이 밟고 지나가며 존재를 잊은 50개 이상의 맨홀부터 아주 오래돼 운행하지 않는 뉴욕 지하철과 사람들이 잘 보지 않는 그림자까지.
이로써 나는 숨겨져 있거나 잊혀가는 것에 집중해 그 들에게 조금이나마 빛을 비추어주고 싶다. 그 빛이 언젠가, 누군가의 시선을 머무르게 할 수 있기를 바라며.
I stay fully observant of myself and the world around me. Life is full of intriguing, unexpected moments happening nearby, especially in New York City, but I used to let them pass me by, telling myself I was too busy and had no time to care about them. That always felt like a missed chance. I realized that if I paid just a little more attention, I could notice things others might never see.
Since then, I’ve recorded everything I see, discover, understand, and remember. I use many different methods, including audio recordings, videos, drawings, writing, and photography. Together, these pieces become my work.
I notice a variety of things: more than 50 manhole covers people step on and forget every day in New York, abandoned subway lines that no longer run, and shadows most people don’t even glance at.
My work focuses on what’s hidden or fading away—things overlooked and almost invisible. I try to give them a little bit of light, hoping that someday, someone might stop, look, and see what I saw.
